Manager Dan Berg was shaking his head from side to side, the admiration shining through as he was talking about the gutty play of his Jersey Outlaws Premier team.
And this was before the Outlaws played in their bracket final at the Blue Chip Fall Finale on Sunday.
After the Outlaws went out and captured the championship game to complete a run of five straight elimination-round wins, Berg was nodding his head over the Outlaws putting the perfect exclamation on their fall season.
When any loss meant they would go home, the Outlaws stayed all day, beating the PA Strikers Gold 16U, 8-0; South Jersey Gators Elite, 7-1; Delaware Cobras Showcase, 4-2; New Jersey Rampage, 10-0; and New Jersey Sparks, 4-1.
It came just one day after the Outlaws weren’t happy with the way they played while going 1-2 – beating the Pennsbury Gems Black, 4-2, in between a 2-0 loss to the PA Strikers Gold and a 5-4 loss to the Delaware Magic 18U.
But that kind of adversity was exactly what the Outlaws needed because they came back focused on Sunday with hitting, fielding, pitching and, yes, gutty play. It combined for one of those days that go among the favorites in the memory bank.
The Outlaws finished 28-4-1 over seven tournaments in the fall, playing at the 18U level with both Class of 2019 (Emma Bachman, Elyssa Bohr, Nicole Cerasi, Amanda Gonzalez and Amelia Johnson) and 2020 prospects (Haylei Archer, Megan Berg, Alexa Blue, Alex Haley, Abbi Markee, Julia Mayernik, Ashlynne Scardino, Madison Sisz, Gigi Venizelos and Abby Zucatti).
