It was a good sign that three college coaches made it a point to descend on the Jersey Outlaws Premier’s first game at the Newtown Rock Fall Showcase this weekend. The way the Outlaws have begun their fall season has been an even better sign. Coach Dan Berg jokes with his players that they’re too young to understand what they’re accomplishing so quickly on the 18U showcase level. They know, however. They know through hard work and perseverance that they will carve their niche even as Class of 2019 and 2020 prospects. Their 5-0 record at the Rock lifted them to 7-1 through two tournaments. They beat the New Jersey Xtreme Gold, 3-2; New Jersey Venom Benish, 11-10; Jersey Girls Fastpitch 18U, 9-5; Central Jersey Fillies 18U, 7-5; and Newtown Rock Futures National, 3-2. The highlights included a walk-off over the Venom in which the Outlaws scored seven times in their final at-bat and the tight final game against the Rock Futures. Five of the Outlaws’ first eight games have been decided by one run and another one has had a two-run difference. The young squad has found timely hitting, good pitching and excellent defense are a must at this level. They’re also finding out they belong there.
